Q:

How can overseas Chinese residents terminate NHI enrollment when leaving Taiwan?
A:
-
Overseas Chinese resident enrolled in NHI who voluntarily apply to the household registration office to deregister their household registration before leaving Taiwan may apply to the NHI Administration to terminate their NHI enrollment effective from the date of household deregistration.

If overseas Chinese residents enrolled in NHI return to their country of residence and do not return to Taiwan for more than three years, the household registration office may deregister their household registration in accordance with the law. Q:

Will my NHI enrollment be terminated if I have not entered Taiwan for two consecutive years and my household registration is deregistered?
A:
Individuals with household registration in Taiwan whose household registration is deregistered because they have been absent from Taiwan for more than two years will have their NHI enrollment terminated effectively from the date of household deregistration. When they return to Taiwan and restore their household registration, they should re-enroll in NHI according to the following rules:
-
If returning within two years after NHI enrollment was terminated: They must re-enroll in NHI from the date their household registration is restored.
-
If returning more than two years after NHI enrollment was terminated: They must have maintained household registration in Taiwan for six months before re-enrolling in NHI. However, employees with a regular employer in Taiwan are exempt from this six-month waiting period and may enroll in NHI from their employment start date.
