Q: How can I be eligible for the single parent allowance in Hong Kong?
A: You can claim the single parent allowance in any year of assessment if a) you have taken ongoing responsibility for the care and supervision to your child, and b) fulfil the following conditions:

Throughout the year of claim you must not be married.

You are granted a child allowance for the year of claim.

Q: What is the difference between child allowance and single parent allowance?
A: Child allowance is an allowance granted for monetary contributions to maintenance and education, while single parent allowance is an allowance granted for time spent on care and supervision.

Q: What if my spouse had no income and I maintained the children. Am I entitled to claim single parent allowance?
A: No. A married person is not entitled to single parent allowance even though you are the sole contributor to maintain the children.

Q: I got divorced in June 2020 and only I maintain the children. Can I claim single parent allowance?
A: You will not be entitled for single parent allowance in the year of assessment 2020/21. The claim can be made in the year following that, which is 2021/22.

Q: I have two children and I solely care of them. Can I claim single parent allowance for each of them?
A: No. No further allowance can be granted for any second or subsequent child.
