What are the general requirements for setting up a travel agency in Malaysia?
A:
  1. A travel agency must be a private company incorporated under the Companies Act 2016.
  2. The company name should signify the nature of the business by using terms like “travel”, “tours”, “journey”, “excursion”, “holiday”, “vacation”, “adventure”, “getaways” etc.
  3. Foreign director must have employment pass for the application of travel agency license.
  4. Shareholder shall not have any share equity interest in other tourism agencies.
  5. Shareholder of foreign company must have at least 3 years’ experience in the tourism industry.
  6. Foreign equity ownership is restricted to company. Foreign individuals are prohibited from owning equity in a travel agency.
  7. The minimum paid-up capital of the company varies according to the type of travel agency license to apply.
  8. The company must have suitable premises in a commercial area.
  9. At least 1 representative of the company who are in the key post (such as Director/ Chief Executive Officer/ Chief Operating Officer/ General Manager) has to attend Travel & Tour Management Course.

What are the steps to open a travel agency in Malaysia?

  1. Company incorporation.
  2. Apply for premise and signboard license.
  3. Apply for Travel Agency License with Ministry Of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC).
  4. Submit documents and await premise inspection by MOTAC.
  5. Submit TTMC Certificate.
  6. Submit tourism association membership certificate.
  7. Pay license fee upon receipt of notice from MOTAC.

What is the licence renewal period?
